Few weeks ago, a press release from my local newspaper caught my attention. It was about my local hair saloon which ranked number one for the term “Hair Saloon” out of, umm 1,260,000 results (it’s no.2 now). Well, I can’t think of any benefit to the hair saloon except may be some cool factor, branding benefit to the people living on the other half of the globe, and extra bandwidth bills.
On the other hand, there are so many website owners desperately seeking to rank number one for the keywords of their industry. Sometimes, having a number one ranking is not enough.
Do anybody actually search using that keywords?
So you ranked high for this few keywords. Looks nice, and best describe the services/products you offered. But your receive little or no traffic. Why? Because nobody searches for them. Hence, it is important to have at least a moderate search volume for those keywords.
Can the keyword convert?
So you ranked high for a few keywords that brings in lots of traffic to your website. It’s great. But nobody seems interest at your products/services. Well, you probably brought in the wrong group of visitors, which results in the failure to convert any sales. Thus, one must think carefully on which keywords that your most ideal prospect/customers would search.
Can your website convert?
Finally, you ranked high for the keywords that bring in traffic, and seems like your ideal customers. But still, not much sales as you would expect. Then it’s time to take a deeper, serious look at your website. Can your website sell? You have brought in the right group of people to the place to the right place. The problem is, the place just never feel right for them. Remember, it takes just 1 click to go from your website, to your competitor’s page.
