SEO challenge by Neil Patel

by Lim CS on March 27, 2007

I seldom catch on the industry’s story here, but this one is interesting. If you haven’t hear of it, it goes like this:

Webloginc founder - Jason Calacanis thinks SEO is bullshit. Neil Patel offers a challenge to him:

So to you Jason, I offer the following challenge: I can take your blog and increase your daily search traffic by a minimum of 10 to 20% after 30 days of putting my changes into effect.

Jason accepted it. And that was a month+ ago.

Fast forward to today, Neil announced at his blog that Jason is SEO’s next evangelist and showing the evidence of 20% traffic improvement.

How did Neil do it?

I’m sure we are more interested to know what changes did Neil do. Well, Neil did highlighted in his blog comment that he added “Meta Description” to all the blog. That’s all (?).

Although one might argue that it is due to the SEO challenge story itself that gained Jason its search traffic, but you really have to give credit to Neil. Looking at the changes of top 10 search queries, a lot of it came from the long tail. And that’s how powerful a little changes such as adding meta description can be, it let search engine indexes more pages with related keywords association.

So readers, learning from this, go to your own blog and view the page source of any specific posts. Do you have the meta keyword and description tag in place? If not, here’s a nifty plugin to automatically add the meta description to your each post. Wordpress only.

Update: Neil revealed his technique here.
