Selling Online Is Hard

by Lim CS on June 18, 2007

Or perhaps not as easy as you think. Let’s break it down:-

The easy a.k.a “most-people-can-do” part

1. Coming out with a ass-kicking idea that looks to makes you live comfortably for the rest of your life.

2. Getting a sounded domain name that really describe your business, probably costs RM30 to RM55.

3. Getting a good web hosting, probably costs RM150 - RM200.

4. Getting all excited - ready to sell your product/services.

The not-so-easy a.k.a “I-need-to-do-more-research” part

1. Finding a payment gateway that with good reputation, accept major payment, low-setup fee and reasonable transaction fee.

2. Finding a web solution company to setup the e-commerce website that fits your budget, does an “okay” job and delivers in time.

3. Or, DIY your own e-commerce solution by getting a free, open source shopping cart, and pray that you don’t get faint reading the long-winding manual or get lost in the installation process or the 100 options you can choose in the administrative interface.

The hard a.k.a “ok-I-give-up” part

1. Getting targeted customers/interested buyers to come to your website.

2. Getting them to buy from your website.

3. Credit card fraud and chargeback, anyone?

For the “not-so-easy” part, a good place to start your research is my friend Adrian’s Neowave. His team really put time into compiling the resource section which would save tons of your time doing research yourself. Also, check out my list of recommended service provider.

On preventing credit card fraud and avoid the costly chargeback, try FraudLabs, or read this article they published.

The rest of the hard part, that’s where my company and myself step in. I will get them covered in the next post.

Ok. So, it is not as hard now? :)

This morning I found a nice colorful brochure on my car’s wiper.

It guarantees to make you at least RM20,000 per month from an online business. The speaker is said to be an expert in the “i” (i believe it means info business). His face is grayed out.

I really hope people would read your post before jumping into the net business.

There’s too many scammers nowadays and the net business seemed to be so “undecipherable” for most people, scammers just can’t resist the temptation to include the word e-business or internet business in their brochures.

Making money in the internet is not easy. That’s a fact.

If a nasi lemak seller cannot compete against another nearby seller, how can he compete in he internet where his competitors are in the millions.

I hope you can help those ecstatic internet newcomers with their business. And help them learn the truth about internet marketing - and differentiate between internet scams and real business.
