Google Webmaster Central announced today that if our website are targeting the audience of the specific country, we must have the followings:
1. Hosted in the server located at the specific country.
2. Using a specific country-coded domain name.
For example, if your website is targeting Malaysians, you must have a .my domain name, and hosted in Malaysia Data Center.
However, registering a country-code domain name can possess some challenges to webmaster. Each country-code domain name has their own guidelines, requirements and restriction. Malaysia country code domain name requires different supporting documents as listed in their website.
The biggest reason that Google suggest these requirement comes down to user experience. Website hosted in the same country as their visitors is significantly faster than those hosted in other countries, like U.S. Having a country-code domain name also assist in branding and shows that the targeted visitors drill down to only specific country.
There are hundreds of tools which you can check the location of your server. I use the DNS Lookup Tool DNS Stuff. Enter your domain name there, and click look up. Then, click on the IP address and wala:
To double check, simply type in your domain name at Google local (Google.com.my for Malaysia), and make sure you select “Pages from Malaysia (or your country)”.

That’s right..with the same location server with segmented location readers, we can get more possibility in reaching good page rank.. Thanks for your info..

That’s true. However, country-coded domain name isn’t as important as it might seem to be. For example, *.com, *.org, *.net, *.info, etc. are “worldwide” ones. On the other hand, it is always easier to rank better in the UK with a *.co.uk domain. The same applies to all countries of course.
In my opinion the server location is more important.
All in all, “geo-targeting” includes more than buying a web space in chosen country. My primary site is located in the US, main traffic comes from there as well. My other sites are located in Slovakia, but primary traffic still comes from USA. It’s up to content and SEO…
