I received an email few minutes ago from Mynic - Malaysia local domain name registrar about the prelaunch of “.my” domain name.

“.MY” is a second level domain name, which is one upper level from third level domain name such as “.com.my”, “net.my” and “org.my”. So the 2nd level domain name will look like “yourdomainname.my”, which looks quite cool in my opinion.
Priority Entry to third level domain name registrant
Mynic is giving the owner/registrant of the third level domain name a priority entry to register the second level domain name. For example, I am the owner of getfound.com.my, therefore I’m eligible to send in the application for getfound.my within this 2 months (starting from today). If somebody else owns a getfound.net.my, whoever that register the domain name the earliest will get the second level domain name.
Pricing and Requirement
There are no process of bidding in the priority entry. Mynic suggested a retail price of maximum RM120 per year which I thought is reasonable. For the requirement part, unlike the third level domain name (you need to have a company to register .com.my, an organization/society to register .org.my..etc), any individuals can register it.
For more details, check out the letter or the FAQ on Mynic’s website.
My Thoughts
It is really hard. Though the rule of thumb of domain name is always “the shorter, the better”, we have to seriously consider the global branding effect of a ‘.com’ as well as our country’s flagship domain name - ‘.com.my’.
Yes, I’m talking about the deep rooted branding impact inside our mind. It would take years before people start to get used to ‘.my’, and the question still lies in whether it can replaced ‘.com.my.
So, a perspective from a “domainer wanna-be” ( I do own around 60+ domain names, still light years behind the real domainer), I probably wouldn’t rush it now to grab the names yet (that means no getfound.my for the time being).
But I’ll keep my eyes open ;) What do you think on the .my land rush?

ya its probably take years for this domain to be recognized by people and world, but its still worth if you grab some niche domain like webdesign.my or jewelery.com to be put in our portfolio. :)
i already think a few of nice domain to grab but must wait until february T_T for public to register this domain.
btw Limcs do you think .Asia is worth for us to buy?

I think MyNIC make something wrong.
.my should be the top level domain name.
.com.my should be the second level domain name.
I will write something about this later and will ping back.
