In my own definition, internet phenomenon is something interesting that spread like fire across mouth or social media on the internet. So continuing from my previous post on my journey on trying to ‘recreate an internet phenomenon’, I have come down of these several factors that would make it happen.
1. It Has To Be Bizzare
It is probably things that you’ve never seen before - something that keeps your mouth hang open after you see it for the first time. Something like the coke on the steak things: yucks! But you get the idea :D
2. Made For Geek
Think about the majority of the internet users. Right, geeks. If you want to know what geek likes or how geek looks like, take a look at the Star Wars Kid or the Numa Numa performance.
3. Make You ROTFLMAO
Which stands for ‘Rollin’ On The Floor Laughing My Ass Off’. In other words, it has to funny as hell. Everybody loves laughter; the internet audience hungers for extreme laughter. Our very own Malaysia Michael Jackson never fail to make me laugh each time.
4. Popular References
Using popular references (such as movies, TV shows), it is very easy to relate to the audience on the internet. The recent Chad Vader series (which plays on the character - Darth Vader of Star Wars) is a very notable success.
5. Catchy Lines
Catchy lines from the movies (or trailers) seemed to caught on very fast, normally spawn in the form of Internet MEME that spread like viruses (which is another form of Internet Phenomenon). A few recent cases are: the Juggernaut B*tch , Muthaf*cking snakes on the Muthaf*cking and THIS IS SPARTA! Ok. I’ll mind my language and lower my voice down a bit.:P
6. Controversial
When probably the first and most controversial video in Malaysia - Negarakuku by NameWee starting to spread out here, I heard it from my friends talking about it first. Controversial stuff doesn’t just leave room for debate and thought, it becomes the thing that we talk about in our daily life. And the word of wisdom is, be careful and responsible on what you do. ;)
7. The ‘X’ Factor
I have to leave the last factor as the ‘X’, the unknown factor. Having been with the internet for so long, I’m sure everyone of us realize one thing - the internet audience is unpredictable. Some internet phenomenon can happen without any obvious reason (like what stated above). One that strikes me the most is Chocolate Rain by Tay Zonday. A doctorate student singing his self composed song in monotonic voice, repetitive chorus and without any expression. And it somehow turns into 10 millions page view to date, spawned out countless of internet MEMEs, heck, even got himself on a TV Show.
So that’s my thought on the scientific part that needed to create an internet phenomenon. And I’m still looking forward for more opinions from you on the possibilities of making it happen. Share and discuss.
