Are SEOs simply Google optimizers?

by Lim CS on May 2, 2007

I’ve been thinking lately that most SEO (which includes myself), only put time in learning and optimize website for Google (and some, Yahoo and Live). Of course, why shouldn’t they? Google accounts for most of the search engine traffic. They are the biggest cake. They are where the money is. They are the verb for internet search.

Wait a minute. Aren’t we missing something here? As far as I can remember, we called ourselves search engine optimizers, not Google optimizers. I thought we are the expert of how search engine works? This includes Ask, Dogpile, Webcrawler and some meta search engines you might not heard of. Clusty? Intute? What about social medias that starting to become “sub search engines” themselves? Technorati Search is brilliant for blog search. Del.icio.us search works like magic. Oh, not forgetting the big guy from China.

Do we have any slightest idea of how these search engines manage their ranking?

No, we probably don’t. Because we would not care. Well, here’s what I think. I think we should start to learn more about them. At least, if we still pride ourselves as a SEO.

- Top 100 alternative search engines, April 2007 by Read/write web.

- Research Beyond Google: 119 Authoritative, Invisible, and Comprehensive Resources by OEDB ( I found this via del.icio.us search..)

searchengines.gifScreen capture (awstats) of 26 different search engines referral for one of my website. I bet there are some names there you might not even heard of.

I guess it has to do with the same old cliche -

“Get lots of backlinks and you’ll rank high in the SERP” uttered by almost all so-calles SEO Experts.

Unfortunately, that technique will only help in Google.

Google is so big nowadays, its very easy to lose track of all the services, products, and pages they provide us.
Simply Google managed to summarize all of those things into one single page.
Simply-Google.com is a roundup of every Google search and service out there on one convenient page.
For those people who don’t have time to learn the shortcuts or creating smart keywords, this page puts everything Google has to offer on one page.
