An In-depth Look Into Free Press Release Site

An Overview

FREE doesn’t always equate to GOOD. In the press release case, some free press release sites do not provide backlinks, or anchor text links, or even any readability at all. In this post, we are going to have an in-depth look into the free press release sites. The free press release sites are gathered from the list I provided in my past post. However, after several usage and test on the sites, I have found out some sites no longer accept free submissions, and some sites are no longer there. I have filtered the list in to 20 press release sites. You can obtain the latest list here.

Search Engine Friendliness

The most important factor of a successful press release campaign is to gather backlinks (under anchor text, if possible). The problem here is, most of the press release sites do not allow in-context backlinks (with anchor text) at all for free submission. And even worse, some sites do not even provide backlinks. So it leaves you wonder, “What’s the point then?”.

The winners, backlinks with anchor-text:

http://www.i-newswire.com/
http://www.prleap.com/

Evil losers, no backlinks if you don’t pay:

Ease of Submission

The truth: everybody hates registration. They need to fill out the long form with particulars that perhaps they filled in millions of times in their entire life. The passwords reminders. The passwords. The email verification. Ahh, just horrible. The best press release site, in my opinion, has to void out the registration part, and make the submission smooth and easy.

Winners (no registration, direct submission):

http://www.i-newswire.com/
http://www.pressbox.co.uk/

Losers that frustrates us:
http://www.pr9.net/ <-require different account registration for different company press submission. Damn!

Readership

The second objective (which should be the first) of the press release is getting your message to reach a widespread audience. Some press release sites are visited by thousands of webmasters everyday. Some are like a spam portal full with viagra and cialis, who’s gonna read them?

Well known winners:

http://www.prleap.com/

Losers

Conclusion

Actually, any publicity, no matter how small, is a good publicity. Although we particular prefer quality press release sites like PRLeap, PRWeb and I-Newswire, but we normally submit all of the sites. Well it’s free(tell me you don’t like free stuff), so there aren’t too much to complain about, right? :)

This is great, the various ideas and the list of links is fantastic, just to say, my site went online in February 2005 and 95% of my back links are from press releases, but to be honest here, the best pull came from paid releases and that is not to say that free does not get the job done the distribution sites seem to put more effort if you pay for your release.

It can be just as cost effective to hire a local PR company to fire out a series of press releases as it is to use the paid online services.
